14-year-old drowns in lake, a short distance from where he jumped in
BARRY COUNTY, Mo. (KY3/Gray News) - The body of 14-year-old boy was recovered late Friday night after he disappeared while swimming in a lake in Missouri.
The Central Crossing Fire Protection District reported that the boy’s body was recovered from Table Rock Lack just before 9 p.m., Friday night.
Fire crews were sent to the area of the Missouri 39 bridge in Shell Knob at about 1 p.m. Friday for a report of a drowning, the Central Crossins Fire Protection District said.
The 14-year-old had jumped into the water from a nearby dock and was overcome by the wind and waves, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol drowning report. The fire district reported he was seen struggling in the water and went under, never resurfacing.
He drowned a short distance from the dock, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.
A vigil was held Friday night for the boy’s family, identified by the fire district as the Heuback family.
“The turnout and at the vigil were both moving and powerful,” the fire district said. “It was a beautiful show of unity, though we deeply wish it had been under different circumstances.”
This marks MSHP Troop D’s second drowning in 2025.
