$25K reward offered for information about vandals behind Spectrum outages
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An up to $25,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest of those behind Spectrum outages in Kansas City.
Spectrum announced on Saturday evening, May 17, that outages across the Kansas City metro have been attributed to severed fibers. A primary network fiber was cut during a criminal act of vandalism, while another third-party fiber, which normally would provide backup and allow services to remain functional, was also slashed.
Early Sunday, May 18, Spectrum reported that service was restored to all impacted customers, but that the investigation into the alleged vandalism is ongoing.
Spectrum said it is working with local, state and federal law enforcement to identify those responsible for the “deliberate and ongoing damaging attacks” to the network’s fiber optic infrastructure. There is up to a $25,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of those involved.
“Criminal acts of network vandalism have become an issue affecting the entire telecommunications industry, not just by Spectrum, largely due to the increase in the price of precious metals. These acts of vandalism are not only a crime, but also affect our customers, local businesses and potentially emergency services,” Spectrum said in an updated statement.
Anyone with information has been urged to report it to the tip line at 833-404-TIPS. No further information has been released.
