Man who allegedly pulled gun in KC laundromat now faces multiple charges
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City man with a history of felony possession of a weapon faces new charges after he allegedly pulled a gun on a man at a local laundromat.
Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Saturday, May 17, indicate that Damion D. Cooper, 45, of Kansas City, has been charged in connection with a firearm that was pulled at a local laundromat.
A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department revealed that around 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, emergency crews were called to the area of Eastwood Trafficway and Ararat Drive with reports of a disturbance that involved weapons.
When first responders arrived, they said they found a victim who reported that while at a nearby laundromat, he spoke to a woman he believed to be the daughter of a friend. When he learned he was mistaken, he moved on.
However, investigators said they learned that a man later identified as Cooper came inside the laundromat and accused the victim of attempting to talk to his girlfriend. Cooper allegedly returned to his blue Lexus, where he retrieved a firearm, racked the slide and pointed it at the victim. Instead of shooting, he sped off in the vehicle.
Eventually, law enforcement officials said the Lexus returned and Cooper was arrested. He claimed to detectives that he thought the victim was about to retrieve a firearm, so he retrieved one from his vehicle first.
Investigators noted that Cooper has several previous convictions for possession of a controlled substance, domestic assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was also federally convicted in 2007 of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
As a result, Cooper has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. A bond review hearing has been set for 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, with a preliminary hearing expected at 1 p.m. on June 16.
As of Monday, May 19, Cooper remains behind bars on a $50,000 bond. No further information has been released.
