Tornado leaves path of destruction in Grinnell, other Kansas towns threatened on active night for severe weather
GRINNELL, Kan. (KWCH) - An overall calm spring for Kansas weather came alive Sunday night with several confirmed tornadoes in the state’s western half. There were close calls for the towns of St. Francis, Scott City and Greensburg, but the community of Grinnell in Gove County took a direct hit.

Photos from the aftermath of the tornado showed extensive structural damage, including destruction of at least a few homes and buildings and the roof blown off the town’s Catholic church.

Along Interstate 70, downed power lines prompted the closure of the interstate, eastbound from Colby to Grinnell and westbound from Hays to Grinnell.
Midwest Energy reported that the tornado caused damage to both the electric and gas systems in the Grinnell area. Late Sunday night, there were roughly 330 customers without power. The company said the gas system has been closed off for inspection of additional damage and to make repairs. Colby District linemen and Gas Personnel were west of town, making those repairs.
Beginning early Monday morning, 12 News will have crews in Grinnell to cover the storm’s aftermath and see firsthand what the tornado left behind.
