Chillicothe police say man walking down street with firearm was not a threat
CHILLICOTHE, Mo. (KCTV) - The Chillicothe Police Department issued a notice on Tuesday, assuring concerned citizens that a man seen walking down a public street with a firearm was not a threat.
According to the department, several people called on May 20 to report what appeared to be a man walking north on Washington Street with an AR-15 gun.
Officers went and spoke with the man, who they said was fully cooperative. He explained he had purchased the gun legally at a nearby licensed business and that he was just walking home with it.
The officers deemed the matter as resolved and said there was no threat to public safety, but thanked the community for their vigilance. They encouraged anyone who sees suspicious behavior to continue reporting it.
According to the Giffords Law Center, there are no specific Missouri laws against open carrying, and it is not against the law to display a gun in public unless it is in an angry or threatening manner.
