Kansas City Fire Department reports 25 cars burned in auction lot fire
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A fire at the Manheim Kansas City auto auction is under investigation after approximately 25 cars were burned early Tuesday morning.
The Kansas City Fire Department dispatched crews to the lot, located near 3900 N Skiles Avenue and just south of Worlds of Fun, after midnight on May 20.
Crews found multiple cars on fire at the back of the property. Issues came up when responding crews ran into an electrified fence surrounding the property. KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins also says that because of the cars’ distance from the street and fire hydrants, it took several firetrucks and about two hours to get the flames under control.
KCFD said 25 cars were burned, but the full extent of the damage to the lot is unclear. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The issues that came up, though, have helped narrow down the possibilities of what started the fire.
“With a vehicle fire like that, it’s very hard to determine. Was it a mechanical issue with a car or something like that? At this point, we don’t see anything as suspicious based on the location and the security of the area,” Hopkins said.
He added the fire may have spread to so many cars because of the winds that hit the area Monday night.
