Fraudulent tax returns lead to indictment for Kansas City woman, court documents say
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City woman was indicted by a federal grand jury in a fraud case that illegally claimed more than $300,000 in refunds for her clients.
Federal court documents said 34-year-old Tanisha Spencer was charged in an 11-count indictment on Tuesday, May 20. Spencer was arrested Thursday and made her first appearance in court.
Court records said Spencer assisted at least six individuals to file at least 11 false and fraudulent income tax returns spanning from 2021 to 2022. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the tax loss associated with the false returns is approximately $334,445.
Prosecutors said the federal income tax returns prepared by the Kansas City woman allegedly included Sick and Family Leave Credits, illegitimate Fuel Tax Credits and inflated Federal Withholding amounts. As a result, the DOJ said Spencer was able to get “substantial refunds” that otherwise they would not have been entitled to.
