Bailey issues consumer alert to 23andMe customers following bankruptcy filing
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is alerting residents after biotechnology company 23andMe filed for bankruptcy in March.
Bailey said customers who believe 23andMe & Lemonaid Health, Telehealth, and Pharmacy should file a proof of claim if they believe one of the businesses owes them money.
The companies filed for bankruptcy in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri on March 23, 2025, Bailey said Friday when he issued a consumer alert. Bailey said the company has proposed to sell all of its assets by June 17.
Anyone filing or believing they should file a general proof claim can do so here.
Customers who believe they could be a victim of 23andMe’s 2023 data breach should file a special proof of claim form, which can be found here.
The deadline for either of those filings is July 14, 2025.
In addition to filing a claim, Bailey said many customers may want to delete their or restrict the company from using any of the remaining data. To delete generic data, follow these steps:
- to your 23andMe .
- Go to the “Settings” section of your profile.
- Scroll down to a section labeled “23andMe Data” at the bottom of the page.
- Click “View” next to “23andMe Data.”
- your data if you want to retain a copy of your genetic data for personal storage.
- Scroll down to the “Delete Data” section.
- Click “Permanently Delete Data.”
- Confirm your request by following the instructions emailed to you by 23andMe. You must confirm the request to have your data removed.
Bailey said as the company attempts to sell to a potential buyer during the bankruptcy process, consumers’ generic data could be viewed as an asset.
