OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) - People are pivoting to different festivities for this Memorial Day due to unusual weather keeping pools closed.

KCTV5′s team of First Warn 5 meteorologists said there have only been 7 Memorial days in the last 54 years with high temperatures in the 60s. On average, our high is 78 degrees.

She normally would spend her Memorial Day with friends and family, “Outside on the patio, enjoying some hot dogs, hamburgers, but probably not this year,” she said.

Kevin Clark took his remote control cars for a spin. “I got into it a year ago. But, I can’t believe the pool ain’t open. It’s Memorial Day. Pool supposed to open ain’t it?”

Ryan Weavy, the Aquatics Manager at Lenexa Parks and Rec, said, “Especially on Memorial Day. It is really unusual. Last year, we had 1,500 plus a day,” he said.

While Monday marks the 6th coldest Memorial Day, people are still making the most of it, anticipating next weekend to be the kick-off to summer.

“We’ll be ready Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Next weekend looks really sunny and warm, so we’re excited to get everybody out here,” Weavy said.

Weavy said they are expecting double the crowds this year, with it being their second year open.
