‘It’s heartbreaking’: Danny Edwards Blvd. BBQ to close doors
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - As many are set to fire up the grill for Memorial Day, a staple barbecue spot on Southwest Boulevard is officially turning theirs off and closing its doors.
Time is ticking on getting your favorite BBQ items at Danny Edwards Blvd. BBQ, which will have to close by the end of the month.
The owner and staff who consider each other family said they’re very emotional about the closing.
The BBQ t opened in 2007. The current owner, Joel Bremer, worked side by side with Edwards for 15 years before he retired.
Bremer bought the restaurant from Edwards in 2018, about four years before Edwards died.
They were good friends, and Danny wanted the business taken over by someone who would keep operations the same.
Although Bremer owns the business, the building is owned by Edwards’ widow. Bremer said he was told the first week of May that he needed to be out of there by the end of the month.
He said he has no hard feelings about the building being sold, but did get emotional when talking about the years of serving up BBQ in Kansas City.

“I’m pretty heavy-hearted, I’ve done this for 20-something years and I thought I’d be doing this stuff until they started shoveling dirt on me, so it breaks my heart,” he said.
When asked what he will miss the most? Bremer said, it is the customers.
“I’ve met a lot of good people. I’ll be missing them, they’re my friends,” he said through tears.
Bremer does not know what will happen with the building once they leave.
He and his wife have been taking down their customers’ info to let them know what’s next.
Bremer said he might want to open another brick-and-mortar barbecue spot, or a food truck, but is sad that he won’t be able to use Danny Edwards’ name.
