KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City man accused of attempting to outrun police in a stolen vehicle has been charged and remains behind bars.

Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Wednesday, May 21, indicate that Johnny M. Nguyen, 27, of Kansas City, has been charged with attempting to outrun police in a stolen vehicle.

A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department revealed that on April 25, law enforcement officials received a report of a stolen 2016 Nissan Maxima. The owners reported they were still in possession of the keys and that no one had permission to use their vehicle.

About a day later, law enforcement officials said they spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop the driver, later identified as Nguyen. However, Nguyen attempted to speed off. Officers in the area of Independence and Hardesty Ave. tried to place tire deflation devices, which Nguyen swerved to miss.

During the maneuver, investigators noted that the stolen car jumped the curb, struck a wooden utility pole and began to skid sideways through the intersection before it stopped in the LendNation parking lot at 5358 Independence Ave.

After the vehicle stopped, KD said Nguyen attempted to run but was quickly taken into custody. When the victim retrieved his vehicle from police custody, the victim said he found two firearms inside. Police responded to seize the weapons, which were both found to have a live round in the chambers.

During the investigation, law enforcement officials said Nguyen was found to be a convicted felon.

As a result, Nguyen has been charged with aggravated fleeing from a stop. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 7 years in prison and be forced to pay a fine of up to $10,000.

A hearing has not yet been scheduled in the case. As of Monday afternoon, Nguyen remains behind bars on a $10,000 bond. No further information has been released.
