Driver behind high-speed chase found to not be connected to nearby shooting
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An investigation has found that the man who led law enforcement officials on a high-speed chase through a residential neighborhood was most likely not involved in a nearby shooting.
Clay County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Friday, May 23, indicate that Masen K. Draughon, 23, of Oakwood Park, has been charged in connection with an early-morning high-speed chase.
A probable cause statement filed by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office revealed that around 2:35 a.m. on April 30, law enforcement officials were called to the area of N. Oak Trfwy. and NE Poplar Dr. with reports of a shooting. Dispatchers advised that a gray Dodge Challenger left the area soon after the shots were fired.
As investigators approached the area of N. Oak Trfwy. and NE Englewood Rd., they said they spotted the suspect vehicle going about 8 mph over the posted limit. As emergency equipment was activated to attempt a traffic stop, the driver ran a stop sign and sped up to around 70 mph in a residential neighborhood.
As law enforcement officials chased the suspect vehicle, they said the driver, later identified as Draughon, almost ran head-on into a patrol car. The pursuit was terminated soon after.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol later said the suspect vehicle had returned to the address it had been ed to. However, when law enforcement attempted to reach the driver at the home, no answer came at the door. Open beer bottles and half-empty cases of beer and other containers were seen inside the vehicle at the time.
Throughout the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said it found Draughon was most likely not involved in the shooting, but had possibly been driving to his home, which was close to the scene.
As a result of the chase, court documents revealed that Draughon has been charged with resisting detention. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 4 years behind bars and be ordered to pay a fine of up to $10,000.
A warrant was issued for Draughon’s arrest on Tuesday, May 27. He does not appear to have been taken into custody as of late Tuesday morning. A court appearance has not yet been set in the case. No further information has been released.
