Illegal street racing, red-light cameras take center stage at police board meeting
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - On Tuesday, May 27, Kansas City law enforcement and representatives gathered for the city’s monthly Board of Police Commissioners meeting. One of the main discussions - the continued crackdown on street racing, sideshows, and illegal ATV drivers in the city.
Kansas City activated its Entertainment District plan at the start of May and has since made dozens of arrests and issued roughly 100 citations.
On Memorial Day weekend, KD officers 19 suspects were arrested and 76 citations were issued in a similar bust.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the city will continue cracking down on dangerous street activities while also addressing other crime issues across the city.
“We will continue to make sure we’re investigating homicides, aggravated assaults, and all the important work and challenges that exist in every neighborhood of Kansas City,” Mayor Lucas said. “That doesn’t mean you get free rein to operate vehicles unlawfully in Kansas City, to obstruct traffic, to cause any number of the concerns that we’ve been hearing from people for some time.”
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said officers will continue working mandated overtime hours as part of the Entertainment District Plan. As part of the plan, additional officers are deployed in areas with high foot traffic, like the Crossroads, Power & Light, and downtown.
Another item of note for the KC Police Commissioners and Mayor Lucas, red-light cameras.
Mayor Lucas said he is hopeful the cameras will lower traffic violations and make city streets safer.
The red-light camera ordinance is still awaiting board approval.
