RICHMOND, Mo. (KCTV) - A Richmond man faces several criminal charges after he allegedly mutilated a dog who was attempting to protect its owner.

Ray County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Tuesday, May 27, indicate that Jerry D. Tackett, 40, of Excelsior Springs, faces multiple felony charges after an incident during which he allegedly mutilated a dog.

A probable cause statement filed by the Richmond Police Department revealed that on Sunday, May 25, a report of possible animal abuse was made to law enforcement officials. The incident was alleged to have happened on May 6.

Investigators said a woman told them Tackett arrived at her home uninvited around 10 p.m. on May 6. He was allowed inside the house despite the belief he had been intoxicated. Around midnight, he allegedly became belligerent and advanced toward the woman before her dog stepped in to protect her.

Law enforcement officials said Tackett allegedly went to the kitchen, grabbed a butcher knife and began to chase the dog. Ultimately, the dog’s tail was sliced before Tackett ran off.

Richmond Police said that the canine was taken to receive veterinary care the next day. Two surgical procedures were required, which cost nearly $700.

As a result, Tackett has been charged with animal abuse, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and property damage. If convicted, he could be sentenced to spend more than a decade behind bars.

Court documents noted that a warrant was issued for Tackett’s arrest on Tuesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, he remains behind bars with no bond listed. An initial appearance has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 29. No further information has been released.
