Local provider raises awareness of skin cancer risks and safe sunscreens
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) -While your skin needs a barrier from the sun’s rays, not all sunscreens have the same benefits.
It’s skin cancer awareness month and summer is about to be in full swing. Dermatology PA Courtney Stene with Kansas Medical Clinic sat down with KCTV to highlight the benefits of skin protection and the dangers of sun exposure. She touched on the importance of SPF.
“If you’re doing yard work or at the pool or at the lake or anything this summer, you want to make sure you’re just reapplying,” says Courtney Stene with Kansas Medical Clinic.
Stene noted that while sunscreen is a popular choice, it’s not the only option.

“There are shirts that you can get that are UPT, and they basically block the ultraviolet rays,” says Stene.
Some sunscreens are less toxic than others. PA Stene recommends a mineral sunscreen that contains zinc oxide. PA Stene also gives a warning to those who plan to be out in the sun.
“Skin cancer can be very dangerous. Having five or more sunburns doubles your risk of melanoma,” says Stene.
The Skin Cancer Foundation provides statistics and resources for people to gain knowledge and equip themselves to keep their skin safe this summer.
