KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol says traffic and boating accidents were greatly reduced this Memorial Day holiday.

Widely regarded as the start of summer, Memorial Day weekend ushers in an influx of travel and tourism, which often correlates to a rise in incidents on the roads and waterways.

Each year, MSHP records all traffic and boating accidents between Friday evening and Monday night of the holiday weekend. This year, the recording period fell between Friday, May 23, at 6 p.m. and Monday, May 26, at 11:59 p.m.

MSHP noted a sharp decrease in incidents across the board, as compared to 2024:

2024 2025
Traffic crashes 275 182
Traffic crash injuries 161 83
Traffic crash fatalities 7 3
Driving while intoxicated (DWI) 128 78
Boating crashes 7 3
Boating crash injuries 7 0
Boating crash fatalities 0 0
Boating while intoxicated (BWI) 6 0

While the data could change if late notices of deaths or injuries are entered, the statistics indicate it was a safer year overall.
