CAMP COUNTY, Texas (KLTV/Gray News) - Police in Texas said a suspect has been taken into custody after a college athlete was killed at a pool party.

The Camp County Sheriff’s Office said 17-year-old Onterrian Jamour Newton was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder.

Deputies said Newton’s arrest comes after deputies responded to a call at a party on Friday.

Responding deputies said they found Henderson State University athlete Jamarion Brown seriously injured from being shot in the head.

Brown was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Camp County Sheriff John Cortelyou said additional charges are pending in relation to two others who were also injured at the party, one of whom was shot in the leg and one was shot in the hip. Neither of them suffered life-threatening injuries.

Henderson State University released a statement on Brown’s death.

“It is with deep sadness that Henderson State Athletics mourns the death of junior men’s basketball student-athlete Jamarion Brown,” the statement reads. “‘Jo’ spent just one season in Arkadelphia, but his impact on our campus was profound.”

Henderson State men’s basketball coach Jimmy Elgas also spoke on his death.

“No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates,” he said. “Jo’s impact was felt not only on the basketball court, but throughout the fabric of Henderson State University, and we all grieve together. His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus, but Jo will be ed and honored in our hearts forever.”

The incident is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

Newton is in the Camp County Jail at the time of reporting. No bond has yet been set.
