Construction projects set to disrupt traffic in Leavenworth County
LEAVENWORTH CO., Kan. (KCTV) - As one road opens, another one closes. Drivers in Leavenworth County have been warned that while construction crews may get in their way on Tonganoxie Road, work along K-16 Highway will soon be complete.
The Kansas Department of Transportation says that on Tuesday, May 27, crews began work on a project along part of Tonganoxie Rd. between 189th and Mitchell Rd. in Leavenworth County.
Department leaders noted that the project is part of the High Risk Rural Roads Program to add shoulders and grade and improve surfaces. Work is set to take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and Saturdays as needed.
For the duration of this project, road workers indicated that Tonganoxie Rd. between 207th and Fairmont Rd. will be completely closed to traffic and a detour will be marked. The detour is as follows:
- Tonganoxie Rd. traffic north of Fairmont Rd. - Turn on Dempsey Rd. and travel west, then turn left on 207th St. Travel south, then turn right on Tonganoxie Rd.
- Tonganoxie Rd. traffic south of 207th St. - Turn left on 207th St. and travel north, then turn right on Dempsey Rd. Travel east, then turn on Tonganoxie Rd.

“With over 20% of fatal and serious injury crashes occurring on county roads, strong partnerships are necessary to achieve the goal of zero roadway fatalities,” said KDOT Secretary Calvin Reed. “KDOT’s collaboration with local governments through programs like HRRR benefits our communities and our public road network.”
KDOT said Lexeco, of Leavenworth, has been chosen as the contractor for the $2.5 million project. Work is expected to be completed in mid-October.
Department leaders also announced on Thursday, May 29, that the pavement improvement project on eastbound and westbound K-16 from K-92, in Jefferson County, to Highway 24/Highway 40 in Leavenworth County, is expected to be completed next week.
Transportation officials indicated that JM Fahey Construction, of Grandview, Missouri, is the contractor for the $4.1 million project, which includes mill and overlay and shoulder widening.

Drivers have been urged to stay alert and follow all posted signs in highway work zones.
