KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - The man who shot and killed a Kansas City deli owner and one of his customers has been sentenced to prison and will not be eligible for parole until 2071.

The Wyandotte County, Kansas, District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday, May 29, that Jermelle Byers has been sentenced to life in prison following his conviction of two counts of murder in the first degree for the shooting deaths of Lachell Day and Dennis Edwards.

Court documents indicated that on the afternoon of July 10, 2019, law enforcement officials were called to Edwards Original Corner Market and Deli at 81 N. Mill St. with reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Day, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Law enforcement officials noted that a 2-hour standoff ensued as Byers remained inside the Deli and exchanged gunfire with officers. He was eventually taken into custody and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound.

When investigators were finally able to enter the building, they said they found Edwards, who was also pronounced deceased. Byers pleaded guilty to both counts of murder in August 2021.

As time served is taken into , legal leaders in Wyandotte Co. indicated that Byers could be eligible for parole as soon as March 10, 2071. Edwards Corner Market permanently closed following the incident.
