Jackson County budget deal reached following months of negotiations
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - After months of debate and negotiations a deal on the Jackson County budget is reached, according to county executive Frank White, Jr. But, that’s not the end of the work.
THe amended budget was introduced when the legislature met Friday morning. It was unanimously advanced by at the meeting. The full legislature is expected to consider the budget on June 9.
The budget will not be in place until it had been adopted by the legislature.
According to White, the budget has some key details that both sides compromised to put in place. Those details include:
- Funding county services
- Millions of dollars were previously expected to be cut. White said the funding protects essential services and avoids layoffs in the Sheriff’s Office and County Counselor’s Office.
- Funding nonprofit organizations
- There is also an additional $3 million in funding for nonprofit organizations in the county. That brings the total investment to $6 million.
- Assigns funding from marijuana sales tax revenue
- The money will be used to help with affordable housing, broadband access and other programs.
“We’re proud of this compromise, but we know there’s still more work to do,” White said. Together, we can finish this process and deliver a budget that truly serves the residents of Jackson County,” White said.
