KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - On Friday, Excelsior Springs’ City Manager, City Council, and the Clay-Ray Veterans Association met to try and find solutions after a second vehicle crashed into the building within three months.

The hall is a busy spot for bingo, and where the American Legion, VFW, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and VFW Auxiliary of Clay and Ray counties in Northwestern Missouri meet and come together.

On Wednesday morning, a car crashed into the roof of the Clay-Ray Veterans Memorial Hall. The hall was closed as it has been undergoing repairs since February, when the first car crashed into the roof.

“It was a freak accident, but it happened twice but now we are looking to the city to help us so that doesn’t happen again and hurt somebody seriously,” said Clay-Ray Veterans Association Financial Officer, Sara Summer.

They are hoping to reopen the Hall before their big September car show and plan to have fundraisers to help keep the organization afloat in the meantime.

They plan to have a big presence at Waterfest at the end of June and are selling t-shirts to raise money.

The driver of a car was injured after crashing into the veterans hall in Excelsior Springs.

With a school next door, they feel that is another big reason to fix this issue.

“It is very imperative that they kind of move this along to make sure it doesn’t happen before the new school year,” said Clay-Ray Veterans Association board member Leeanna Jones.

The City Manager said Friday’s meeting was productive and they want to find the best solution moving forward.

“We will start those conversations right away with our engineering firm, and we have some materials that we could put in place right away. So that is something that we could begin quickly, but we want to make sure we are not creating new problems,” said Excelsior Springs City Manager, Molly McGovern.

It will most likely be weeks or even months before the road has a solution and the roof is fixed, but they ask everyone to show their to the Clay-Ray Veterans Association so they can continue their work.

They have set up a Venmo where people can donate: @legionpost236. They also have a P.O. Box that people can send checks to at Clay Ray Veterans, P.O. Box 297, Excelsior Springs, MO 64024.
