Panasonic announces grand opening celebration for battery plant in De Soto
DE SOTO, Kan. (KCTV) - The opening of the world’s largest electric vehicle battery plant in De Soto will be celebrated this summer.
Panasonic announced the grand opening for its $4 billion plant in De Soto will be held Monday, July 14.
The company has not said when production at the facility will begin.
Crews broke ground on the plant in November 2022, choosing the Kansas location over more than 80 other sites around the country.
The plant is expected to eventually employ at least 4,000 people when the plant is fully operating at the end of 2026.
The Kansas battery plant will mostly supply lithium-ion EV batteries to Tesla vehicles as part of an existing deal between the car company and Panasonic’s energy unit.
The De Soto area is expected to grow as the plant opens, De Soto and others worked ahead of time to update wastewater treatment, energy, broadband access, and roads for the facility.
