Royals reinstate Seth Lugo, place reliever Lucas Erceg on Injured List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - After managing through a couple of “bullpen games” over the last two weeks, Matt Quatraro will get one of his reliable starting pitchers back. But the news isn’t all positive.

The had been placed on the 15-day IL with a finger sprain.

In a corresponding move, the Royals placed arguably their top reliever on the 15-day IL, retroactive to May 27. Erceg was not called upon in a late-game situation on Wednesday night in the Royals 3-2 win over Cincinnati, and Quatraro had said the reliever was dealing with an illness.

But on Friday, the Royals stated that Erceg was diagnosed with a low back strain.

Lugo, a 2024 All-Star and Cy Young runner-up, has not pitched since May 11. He is 3-4 with a 3.02 ERA in nine starts this season.

Erceg had boasted a 1.96 ERA over 23 innings and posted an 18-3 K/BB ratio.

The Royals host Detroit for a three-game series this weekend. Kansas City (30-27) sits in fourth place in the AL Central, seven games behind the Tigers (37-20).
