Drivers seriously injured during rear-end collision in highway work zone
Children taken to KC hospital with minor injuries
CAMERON, Mo. (KCTV) - Two drivers were seriously injured while two children sustained minor injuries during a rear-end collision in a Missouri interstate work zone.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol indicates that around 3 p.m. on Friday, May 30, emergency crews were called to the area of southbound I-35 and Highway BB, south of Cameron, with reports of a 3-vehicle crash.
When first responders arrived, they said they found a 76-year-old Lamoni, Iowa, man had been driving a 2015 Toyota Highlander south on the interstate. He had been followed by a 59-year-old Kansas City man in a 2023 Kia Telluride and a 30-year-old Pattonsburg woman in a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica.
State Troopers indicated that the Pattonsburg driver failed to slow for construction through a work zone and ran into the back of the Telluride. The impact caused the SUV to hit the back of the Highlander in front of it.
Emergency crews indicated that the Telluride was forced off the roadway as a result.
First responders said the Pattonsburg woman was taken to Liberty Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Kansas City man also sustained life-threatening injuries but was taken to North Kansas City Hospital.
Meanwhile, State Troopers noted that a 6-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, both engers in the Pattonsburg woman’s vehicle, sustained minor injuries and were taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
Investigators said that everyone involved had been wearing a seatbelt at the time. The Pacifica and Telluride were totaled in the crash, while the Highlander sustained extensive damage. No further information has been released.
