Bright future for KC Streetcar and Prospect Avenue, say city leaders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Transportation, Infrastructure and Operations Committee meeting brought some big developments about the Streetcar Main Street Extension.

The project is near completion and has had final funding officially approved.

City leaders told the committee Tuesday morning, June 3, that they are done asking for money after pushing $2.2 million more across the finish line. The project is 99% complete, the last funding slated to go towards a study with the Federal Transit istration (FTA) and payments for design.

The committee learned the main street extension is operable and working; now, city leaders are working to publish a schedule.

Excitement filled council chambers when approval went through, with highlighting its future impact.

“Especially as we get ready for the World Cup and being on the world stage and having the streetcar on Main extended is fantastic,” Councilwoman Melissa Robinson said.

Robinson also presented during the Finance, Governance, and Public Safety Committee following the transportation meeting.

The meeting focused on ProspectUS - a plan targeting revitalization for the Prospect Avenue corridor. The plan is to invest $500 million into the area over the next 10 years. Numerous residents spoke in of focusing on the future east of Prospect. Final approval from council direct the city manager to create an advisory group and locate funding.
