YUMA, Ariz. (KTVK/KPHO/Gray News) - An Arizona father is speaking out after the body of his 2-year-old son was found during a welfare check on the child’s home. It led to the arrests of the boy’s mother and her boyfriend, who are now facing murder charges.

Angelina Vasquez, 20, and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Miguel Garcia, are facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder and abandonment or concealment of a dead body. Police say the remains of Vasquez’s 2-year-old son, Kano Aguerro, were found Friday afternoon during a welfare check at the child’s home in Yuma.

Kano’s father, Ethan Aguerro, is devastated by the loss of his son. He says he had been trying for weeks to see Kano, but with Vasquez became increasingly difficult. The last time he saw the 2-year-old was in March.

“I would just give one more day to be with him, to say goodbye,” Aguerro said.

The father says Garcia told him Friday that he would finally be allowed to see Kano, but Garcia never showed up and Aguerro knew something was wrong.

“Things were not adding up, and he was making excuses,” Aguerro said.

Later on Friday, police arrive at Aguerro’s door to inform him that his son was missing. That same day, the boy’s remains were found.

“I couldn’t believe it. I never thought Angelina or her boyfriend would do something like this,” Aguerro said.

Aguerro describes Kano as a joyful little boy who loved everybody. He says he wishes Vasquez had asked for help before things escalated.

“If he was too much for them, I thought she would give me a call,” he said. “I just wanted my son to come home. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

As the investigation continues, Aguerro is raising money through GoFundMe to lay Kano to rest. He hopes to bring the 2-year-old home to the Quechan Reservation, so he can be buried per his family’s traditions.
