TOPEKA, Kan. (KCTV) - Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a state of disaster emergency proclamation Tuesday afternoon due to heavy rainfall and potential flooding and flash flooding.

The declaration allows for resources to be provided for state assistance.

“Flood waters can be deceptive; and it only takes 18 inches of water to float a car,” Kelly said. “If you are traveling in areas with heavy rainfall, I encourage you to one simple phrase if there is water on the roadway: ‘Turn around, don’t drown.”

Kelly’s office said the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) has partially activated the State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka to monitor potential flood activity and assist counties with their needs following Tuesday’s storms and heavy rainfall across Kansas.
