The Heat is On! National teen BBQ Championships square off in Gardner
GARDNER, Kan. (KCTV) - Maybe you happened to be in Gardner, Kansas these last days and wondered what that smokey smell was from. It was from some talented teens at Gardner-Edgerton High School!
The high school played host to teens across the country in the National High School Barbecue Competition.
Dozens and dozens of middle and high school teams around the country converged in Gardner for one goal only: to be named top teen grill masters in the U.S.
The pits were loaded, grills fired, and smokers smoking in a meaty competition for top spot.
More than 450 students, making up more than 90 teams from seven states, fought it out to be crowned grill master champion.
“They are our next generation of the future pit masters, so to see them trying new things, stepping out of their comfort zone, trying new dishes, trying new proteins, different smokers, grills, and flavors is unbelievable,” exclaimed Sunny Moody, Competition Judge and owner of Mood Swing BBQ. “I would put any of these kids up against the adults, anytime.”
Now in its fifth year, students are judged for taste, technique, and presentation.
