Murder charges filed after construction worker dies in days following KC shooting
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Murder charges have been filed against a 26-year-old who is accused of shooting a Kansas City construction worker in the head during an argument.
Court documents revealed that Hoskins-Ellis has been charged with murder in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action.
A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department indicated that on May 16, law enforcement officials were called to E. 73rd and S. Benton Ave. with reports of a shooting. There, they found a victim lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators noted that the victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased days later. Witnesses told them the victim had been working construction on a nearby home when Hoskins-Ellis arrived and began to argue with him.
Witnesses reported that Hoskins-Ellis retrieved a firearm from his truck and shot the victim in the head. An unnamed individual at the scene advised him to retrieve the shell casing before they both left.
Investigators said they found the pair had known each other for about six months before the shooting. Hoskins-Ellis was taken into custody when he arrived at the Downtown Kansas City probation and parole office on Friday.
KD noted that Hoskins-Ellis’ vehicle was towed from a nearby lot before around 2 lbs. of marijuana, a baggie of cocaine, multiple THC lollipops and chocolates as well as a baggie of unknown pills were found inside.
As of Monday morning, Hoskins-Ellis remains behind bars on a $500,000 bond. An initial appearance is expected to be held at 1 p.m. on Monday.
