Kansas City Airport could add new cell phone parking lot with amenities
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - City leaders will soon consider a plan to build a new cell phone waiting lot at Kansas City International Airport.
The idea would be to add the lot and use it to seperate rideshare drivers from people waiting to pick up family and friends at the airport.
Plans are still in the initial phases, but call for a parking lot on Bern Street. It also adds additional lighting, security cameras, a public restroom facility, and an emergency phone.
The plan was on the agenda for the June 10 Kansas City Transportation, Infrastructure, and Operations Committee meeting.
The initial estimate cost for the project is nearly $5.4 million. Councilman Kevin O’Neill voiced his concerns about the price.
“How in God’s name did we get to $5 million on a cell phone lot?” O’Neill said during the meeting.
“It just doesn’t make sense to me. That seems like a lot of money for pavement and lines.”
O’Neill asked for itemized cost estimate on the project to be submitted.
The project is expected to be discussed during a meeting on June 24.
