Lansing inmate convicted of escaping prison: ‘The simplest rule when incarcerated’
LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, Kan. (KCTV) - The Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office says a man who walked out of a minimum-security unit is back and facing further penalties.
According to a release, on April 7, 2024, 55-year-old Bradley G. Verstraete was seen on surveillance footage walking out of his living unit without permission. He was discovered missing at the 8:30 p.m. count and declared an escapee.
The next day, a Lansing resident reported seeing someone suspicious, and responding police officers identified the person as Verstraete and arrested him.
On June 9, 2025, Verestraete was found guilty of aggravated escape from custody. His sentencing hearing will be held in July.
Todd Thompson, county attorney, said escaping from prison is an unnecessary expense that will not be tolerated.
“The simplest rule when incarcerated is not to escape. We take this offense extremely seriously, especially in a community like ours, which has multiple correctional facilities,” said Thompson.
