Want to learn how to catfish? Missouri conservationists will teach you how:
BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. (KCTV) - Missouri conservationists have invited those who wish to learn how to use alternative means to fish for catfish to attend a free 2-day weekend course.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has invited those interested in learning how to fish for catfish on the Missouri River with alternative methods - like trotlines, juglines and limblines - to a free 2-day clinic in Blue Springs.
Conservationists noted that the “Big Muddy Alternative Methods Catfish Clinic” will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 NW Park Rd. Staff will lead an orientation with different types of set lines to target blue, flathead and channel catfish.
Department leaders indicated that attendees will then go out on the river on Saturday afternoon in MDC boats to set trotlines, jug lines and limblines for catfish. The day will end around 7 p.m. There will be time to eat lunch between the session and time on the river.
Participants have been asked to bring snacks and water as well as dress appropriately for the weather. The morning is expected to be cool with a hot afternoon in store.
Then, at 8 a.m. on Sunday, MDC said participants will return to the river for a meeting at the LaBenite Park River Access, where they will collect the fish they caught overnight. Staff will show them how to clean catfish for eating before the day ends at noon.
Conservationists noted that the program is appropriate for adults and families with children ages 9 and older. Equipment, like life vests, will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own approved vests if they prefer; however, they will be required at all times on the water.
Registration is required; those interested can do so HERE.
