Kansas City new focus of FBI, ATF effort targeting violent crime, gang violence
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City will be home to a new federal task force aimed at targeting violent crime and gang activity.
The announcement by the agency last month. At that time FBI Director Kash Patel said more than 1,000 agents and analysts would be reassigned from Washington, D.C. to field offices across the country.
In a statement, the FBI said the task force is in “response to the growing threat to public safety and national security.”
The new effort will not just rest with the FBI. The following federal agencies have also play a critical role in the success of the task force:
- Drug Enforcement istration (DEA)
- Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agency (ATF)
- U.S. Marshals Service
- Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation
- U.S. Attorney’s Offices
- Western District of Missouri
“This new HSTF model puts all agencies in the same room with one focus: crushing the presence of criminal organizations in our communities. Through interagency collaboration and surging resources to this task force, the FBI and HSI are making clear it’s priority: protect the homeland and ensure the safety and security of our community from violent criminals,” Stephen A. Cyrus, FBI Kansas City Special Agent in Charge, said.
Task force agents will focus on the following crimes in an effort to make the Kansas City area safer:
- Drug trafficking
- Money laundering
- Weapons trafficking
- Human trafficking and smuggling
- Homicide
- Extortion
- Kidnapping
The agents based in Kansas City will be responsible for increased enforcement in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa.
