Gardner man charged with felonies after incident involving security officer in northeast Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Gardner man is facing several felony charges after an incident at a northeast Kansas City business involving a security officer.
According to court documents filed in Jackson County, Jason Payne is charged with felonies for unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.
A probable cause document filed Wednesday said officers with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department were dispatched on a reported shooting just after 10 p.m. Tuesday night. KD’s police call log shows a shooting call at 10:07 p.m. at 8100 Wilson Road.
There, police said they found Payne on the ground, in handcuffs, bleeding from apparent trauma and a security guard rendering aid to him. KD officers also saw two live rounds and a black handgun near Payne.
He was transported to North Kansas City Hospital.
Court documents said police interviewed the security officer, who told them he saw Payne and a woman tresing on the property. The security officer took photos of the individuals and noticed Payne had also tresed on May 19 while looking through recent photos of tresers, the court document said.
The woman was allowed to leave due to it being her first offense, the security officer said. The document alleges Payne told the man several times not to call the police and attempted to get onto his bicycle. When the security officer grabbed the bike to prevent him from mounting it, Payne ran away.
The security officer said Payne ran approximately 300-400 yards before turning and pointing a handgun at the security officer, who had followed him in a work vehicle. The security officer said he then fired several shots, striking Payne and causing him to fall to the ground. When Payne ignored verbal commands and grabbed his gun and pointed it at him, the security officer said he fired several more times, striking Payne again.
“At that time, Payne complied with (his) request to throw his firearm away from him,” the probable cause document read.
Police said the gun Payne threw away from him had been defaced, making the serial number unreadable. KD said Payne had several previous felony convictions across multiple states ranging in time from 2002 to 2023 and in crime from burglary to property to escaping jail and failing to as a sex offender.
